Set List

This is my final set list for UpRising Church, for more info, read the most recent post.

D - Dancing Generation (Redman)
A - Overtaken (Gateway Worship)
C - Blessed Be Your Name
E - There is Nothing Like (Hillsong)
C - Bless the Lord (Deyo)

We blew one of the theater’s power breakers at a terrible time this morning, I say that, but is there really a good time? We made it to the third song in the set and then the lighting blew to one spot and one blue can (which is about 8 lights short of our normal setup). I honestly didn’t know what to do, so i just kept truckin’ right on through. Our sound all runs from inside the theater, so that was really no issue. We pipe in all of our lighting electricity from the film control room. We actually pull electricity from four or five other theaters - so ours knocked out the KidZone projector this morning, too. This week, we blew the one that controls the overhead lighting in our theater - so we lost complete control while they system rebooted. It sounds worse than it actually was. I honestly can’t believe it took 7 weeks to do it.

We did a live drama this morning - a straight jacket monologue. Dramas can be one of the most effective forms of communication, but running them live in a portable setting is always dangerous. Our mic was having some problems immediately into the drama, and we couldn’t risk the distraction, so we immediately killed the mic. Lisa Marie did a flippin’ amazing job. I told everyone to be ready to run without a mic just in case. I’m not sure that it wasn’t more powerful without the mic. She didn’t miss a beat and it was incredibly powerful.

Now, for the actual set:

A - Break Free (Hillsong United)
F - Lord of All (Hillsong London) You’ve got to love a song with at least 3 different time signatures - especial 7/4.
G - We Are Hungry (Steve Fee/Passion)
D - Rescue (Jared Anderson/Desperation Band/New Life Church)
D - Lead us Up the Mountain (Matt Redman)

Sitting down for the creative team meeting, so I’ll make this short.

We had Michael and Anavox in today to lead worship and they did an amazing job. They’re set list:
Let the Praises Ring
Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?
Better is One Day
How Great is Our God

Thanks!

Okay, so I’m actually typing this in Word at the airport on my way heading out of town. Hopefully, I’ll have an opportunity to post this late tonight or early in the morning.

It was a gigantic day for me personally – it’s the first opportunity I’ve ever had to teach during a weekend service. Make no mistake – I was incredibly nervous. Some of that nervousness had to do with the people in the room, but honestly, the thought of talking about the Word for 30-40 minutes without screwing it up and adding your own opinion in there is a daunting task for someone with as many opinions as I have. I take the responsibility of teaching the Word very seriously – so it’s been weighing on my mind very heavily in recent days.

I got to the theater early to make sure everything was ready to rock-n-roll. Setup ended up way behind because we had a couple of folks late and out of town this weekend. Also, Beth was supposed to lead almost everything this morning to make it easier to get my mind ready for teaching – she woke up sick this morning, so I could feel the pressure begin to mount. We started rehearsal about 30 minutes late. Usually that puts me in a real funk for the morning – but I really expected something like that to happen this morning, so it wasn’t a big deal when it actually did happen.

We did a short set up front so we could do some at the end of the service. We probably started the service about 3 minutes late, so it was good we cut down and rearranged.

G – Shout of the King
G - Holy Moment
A – Revelation Song
B - Sweetly Broken

Hey folks!

B - One Way (Hillsong United)
C/D - You, You Are God (Gateway Worship)
A - My Glorious (Passion)
D - Lead Me to the Cross (Hillsong)

We dropped There is Nothing Like (Hillsong) to make sure there was plenty of time. I love songs with good tags and My Glorious and Lead me to the Cross are both great. We may have found a new electric player! Woohoo!

How refreshing. We had a full band that tore it up - thanks to Dave Sims for switching from bass to keys this weekend, and also, thanks to Rich Gurrerro and Mike Friedrick for filling in for us this weekend. We were a little slow getting rolling this morning for rehearsal, but I felt great about the sound and feel.

The Lord’s really convicted me this week of not walking confidently in my calling. I’ve let circumstance and frustrations make me into an unconfident worship leader. I started rehearsal this morning with repenting to the team for doing a poor job of leading. We moved from that into a time of prayer to start off the morning. That’s something I did the first 5 years I led worship - every time. Not just me praying to start things off - but encouraging every team member to spend time preparing their heart - slowing down and reflecting on Him. It’s kind of like a tithe - you know, it redeems the rest. Since we’ve started like that - we’ve hand ample time, even starting 10-15 minutes later and adding a song. It’s important to have a spiritual transition time when you come out of 2 hours of setting up.

Our set today consisted of:
A - Break Free (Hillsong)
D - I Am Free (New Life/Ross Parsley)
B - Salvation is Here (Hillsong)
G - Everlasting God (New Life (NOT Benton Brown))
A - Above All (Hillsong London)

Transitions were a little slow between songs, but you know 3 seconds of silence can feel like an eternity. Now, to finding an electric player for next weekend…

Here it is:

E - Salvation (Charlie Hall/Passion)
C - Blessed Be Your Name (Redman/New Song)
C/D - To Deserve (Stockstill/Bethany World Prayer Center)
C - How Great is Our God

I feel like we had a great sound again this week despite our lack of musicians again. I found out about 7PM that we would be running again without a keyboard player. With a little extra time last night to think about it, I was able to gear down and focus on the set list. I ended up tweaking one or two songs last night so make it a little easier on me playing the keys. I hate having to “dumb” things down for me to be able to play. We’re going to take things a different direction so we can count on our keys player being there. I’m going to take my list of electric guitarists and try to place subs in for the next six weeks while we work on developing our own from among our ranks.

Props again to my wife for being flexible and stretching herself to play electric and acoustic.

What a day! I’m absolutely exhausted. It was an intense morning to say the least. We started setup at 6AM. We finished setup at 7:45 which was a reduction from the 4 hour setup we did yesterday. The service ran longer than usual, so we had to bust it to get everything down in about 45 minutes. What an amazing team. I’m pretty sure everyone went home and crashed hard after yesterday and today.

G - Holy Moment (Redman c/o Superchick)
D - Dancing Generation (Redman)
C - Bless the Lord (Deyo)
G - Revelation Song (Gateway)
Bm - What I’ve Done (Linkin Park)

The band rocked all morning, but especially on What I’ve Done. I hate to miss someone - but I have to say again what a great team we have at UC - Jeromy Rowe nailed the rhythms on drums, Dave Sims nailed the lead while playing bass, Chel’s sound was full and super rocker-chick (as usual), Will Lindberg was all over the piano intro, and Bill Renfrew gave the song its meat - shredding it on electric. Michelle came in and delivered on Revelation Song and Holy Moment (thanks a ton for filling in) and once again Robin blew her pipes (alto) with tight harmonies right on time. I can’t tell you how amazing it is to have people like this.

I have a very hard time transitioning my head from one part to another and I’m not sure what I’m going to do about that - from setup to rehearsal to music set, and sometime soon, to teaching. We’ve scaled up tremendously from when we launched in January - there’s absolutely no way we could have pulled off this first week in a new location with our amazing production team.

One more thing - I always give credit to our volunteers, but I also want to say thanks to our staff. They always have other things they have to take care of, but that doesn’t stop them from getting right in the middle of what we’re doing to lift, carry, run, or help in some other way - to Jonathan, Vikie, Tim, Ray, Pam, Joe, Angela, and Freddie - thank you for setting the standard in leadership by example.
