February 2007

I think that one of the toughest part of leaving home is leaving family and friends. We haven’t had to go through any family birthdays/holidays away from home since we moved. Today is my mom’s birthday, and though I don’t believe I’ve seen her on all of her birthdays, there’s just something about being 6 hours away from her that makes it sad. I guess it’s just growing up…

The other tough part of moving has been not seeing our freinds. Luckily, our friends from home come and visit us, but relationships change. We had dinner tonight with a couple from the church and we had a great time. It would seem that we might have found a second set of friends (outside of staff) since we’ve moved up here…only time will tell. It’s great to be a part of a church body again…

Hey folks…I wanted to repost this message after our Membership 411 tonight. These are the songs we decided to start with…we’ve stuck with it for the most part.

Wow! It’s hard to finalize a set list as we get ready for our first services. We’re making CDs for 20 songs we want the band/vocalists to have ready for when we launch our teams in January. We don’t have a CD duplicator, so for now I’m having to burn them off one-by-one on my laptop! LOL! I haven’t done that since the first CD I made when I was a worship leader when I was 16.

The songs we’re using pull from Hillsong, Desperation, Gateway, Passion, and Bethany WPC. The songs vary, but I know they have the “edgy” feel we’re looking for. We’re also pulling in a few that people are more familiar with and might be more comfortable singing. The name of the game is balance! Ahhhh! If I had it my way, I’d make balance a 4-letter word.

If you want to hear clips from the songs, click on the links below:

Bound (Gateway Worship/Integrity Music)
Overtaken (Gateway Worship/Integrity Music)

Here’s this week’s set list…we’ll probably do You, You are God and Overtaken again next week…

C – I Am Free (New Life Church/Ross Parsley)
C/D – You, You Are God (Gateway Worship/Integrity)
C – How Great is Our God (Chris Tomlin/Passion Music)
D – Anything (New Life Church/Jon Egan)
A – Overtaken (Gateway Worship/Integrity)

I’m really stuck on the Gateway Worship CD right now. It has some really good stuff.

Wow!!! I’m simply amazed.

Each week, we take two hours and make a gym turn into a bonafide worship center. It’s AMAZING! We have 4 folks (including my amazing wife) who setup the entire sound system. There are usually 3 or 4 of us working on putting up the platform. We have 2 folks setting up the lighting each and every week. We have 1 (Pam) who runs the projectors/TV. It gets better and better each and every week. I’m going to post some before a d afterr pictures tomorrow so you have some idea of the transformation that takes place.

We couldn’t do it without each and every one of you. Many churches who do a plant are still just trying to get something together after 6 weeks off setting up. We have a setup that I believe is excellent! We’re not “settling.” Our vision has been to be cutting edge from the very first week, and I think we are! We’re looking for every opportunity to grow and be more cutting edge, but we just couldn’t do it without our amazing setup team! You folks are incredible! I’m going to try names, but I am afraid I’ll leave someone out..

Thanks Pam!
Thanks Cliff!
Thanks Zack!
Thanks David!
Thanks Dave!
Thanks Becca!
Thanks Ron!
Thanks Linda!
Thanks David!
Thanks Micki!
Thanks Tracy!
Thanks Daniel!
Thanks Patty!
Thanks Ray!
Thanks Elaine!

And in this week from Pine Bluff, Arkansas:
Thanks Brent!
Thanks Robin!

If I missed you, I’m sorry! You guys are amazing. Our team works great together, but we could use “back-ups” for each of those folks. If you’re interested in learning how to help us setup and be a part of the setup team, call me or drop me an email: matthew@uprisingchurch.org.

How do you know when you’ve found the Daniel’s apartment? You’ll be greeted by Tusk, the Razorback mascot for the University of Arkansas. While we have embraced Nashville as a city, we still embrace our good old razorbacks. We killed Tennessee during the football season, but it seems that they’re giving us our retribution. Pat Summit’s Lady Vols beat Arkansas in OT last night. But Tusk will sit proudly at our front door, in the good seasons and bad.

What a terrible week to be sick! We made a trip to Arkansas this weekend and during the car ride there, I felt my body shuttin’ down. Ahh!!! I don’t have much of a voice and I feel terrible! Life goes on! Good news for you means that you get to hear more of Beth Luca leading worship this weekend. She and Angela do a fantastic job, and I’m excited for the opportunity for her to lead.

We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. ~ Ben Franklin

Picture this – 56 men have gathered together on a hot day in July. These men have discussed the problems with maintaining the status quo for months. Time and time again they see they’re lives crumbling around them – bound further and further by some selfish outside presence with the desire of removing their freedoms one by one. As these men gather, the conclusion is made – we must abandon the current state of things. They must abandon what had been comfortable for them, their stability, their resources, their income and unite together and depend on each other to meet their needs.

Suddenly we hear the voice of an elderly man chime in, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.” With that, Ben Franklin and his 55 cohorts signed the Declaration of Independence – discarding what little stability they knew to band together with strangers hundreds of miles away to fight an enemy that seemed insurmountable.

Establishing UC over the past few months has been an amazing journey. It’s an exciting fight – and it must continue. At the point that we become a member of this local Church body – we, like the signers of the Declaration of Independence, make a commitment to each other to stand in support of one another.

By nature, we as humans are divisive, often pointing out the difference between us (especially the negative ones) to keep people at arms length. The problem is that once we’ve distanced all but the select few, we walk into battle, and there’s no one there to fight with us. The differences between each one of us are vast, and the potential for division is enormous. Friendships and churches alike have split over doctrine and carpet color, music style and song selection, major issue and minor issue as well.

My warning today is this – be aware. Many predators work to get their prey separated from the pack, and once they have, they’re dead . Though missing a weekend service, connect group, or rehearsal may seem insignificant, the possibility of being separated from those you’re in covenant with is always there, and may produce unwanted results.

Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Pet. 5:8

I encourage each of you to examine the relationships in your life and the commitments you’ve made and honor them. Discover the pettiness of the items that bring division to you and other believers and focus on this one thing – love. It’s hard to hate those you love.

Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. Acts 2:1

From the Biblical examples we can see, God clearly honors those who do two things:
Come together in unity
Seek Him

I want to see the power of God manifested in and through us like Peter and Paul saw; however, as long as we allow ourselves to be divided – not just by doctrines, but by how we feel – we will continue to be devoured by the enemy.

I want to camp here just a little longer. One of the things God taught me recently is that I mustn’t forget on the bad days what He has promised me on the good days. It’s much easier to have faith when everything feels right. It’s much harder to have faith when it doesn’t feel like things are going to work out. It’s much easier to follow through with your commitments when people are always easy to get along with and never hurt you – but alas, this is not the world in which we live.

Get the negative talk out of your mouths and out of your thoughts and bind together in unity – one heart, one mind – and see what God will do.

Well…for those who wonder why it’s been so long since I blogged…

Today I started work at 7:30. I worked until 6:30 when we began band rehearsal and then when we finished at 9:30, I had dinner and started back up. I’m heading to bed now. I’m not returning phone calls before 10AM tomorrow…and it’s gonna be a light day…no matter what.

Rehearsal went great. I’m really excited about the worship this weekend. It’s important that each of us come with an expectation of what God’s going to do. Until then…I’m going to bed!
